18-year-old paula Jean welden vanished in the Green mountain

Her case remains unsolved.

The mysterious disappearance of Paula Jean Welden remains one of the most chilling unsolved cases in American history. On December 1, 1946, the 18-year-old college student from Bennington, Vermont, set out for a solo hike along the Long Trail, a popular stretch of rugged wilderness in the Green Mountains.

Known for her adventurous spirit, Paula had told friends and family she wanted to explore the snow-dusted trail before the winter fully set in. But she never returned, and what should have been a routine day in the woods became the beginning of a decades-long mystery.

Paula was last seen on a steep stretch of trail near Woodford Hollow, a sparsely wooded area of the Green Mountains. Witnesses reported seeing her walking confidently along the path, but within a matter of minutes, she vanished. Searchers later noted that there were no signs of a struggle and no clues as to which direction she had gone.

The suddenness of her disappearance in an area frequently hiked by locals added to the eerie nature of the case — a young woman simply evaporated from a well-trodden trail.

Authorities quickly organized a massive search effort, enlisting local police, volunteers, and even cadaver dogs. They combed the trail, nearby streams, and dense woods, but found nothing. In the days following, some hikers reported strange sightings of a lone woman in the mountains, but none were conclusively linked to Paula. Despite exhaustive efforts, her personal belongings — coat, books, and map — were left untouched at her dormitory, deepening the sense of mystery surrounding her disappearance.

Over the years, theories about Paula’s fate ranged from accidental death to foul play, and even to the possibility that she had wandered off deliberately. Some suggested she may have fallen into a hidden ravine or been swept away by a hidden brook. Others speculated about abduction, although there was no concrete evidence to support that theory. Her case became one of the earliest in Vermont to prompt a discussion about missing-person protocols, influencing the eventual creation of statewide search procedures.

More than seventy-five years later, Paula Jean Welden’s disappearance continues to baffle investigators and haunt the public imagination. The Long Trail, while still popular with hikers, carries an air of solemnity and mystery for those who know her story. Paula’s sudden vanishing from a trail she knew well remains an enduring enigma — a stark reminder of how quickly the wilderness can hide a life and leave behind questions that may never be answered.
